Dr.Mzu Bio

Mzukisi is one of South Africa’s most recognised thought leaders, an analyst, author, and keynote speaker.

 

Mzukisi is formerly Chief Director: Trade Policy at the Department of Trade and Industry. He was responsible for research and policy at the International Trade Division of the DTI, and he drafted the current South African trade policy and strategy framework. He is author of the book: "The Fall of the ANC: What Next?", published by Pan Macmillan (Picador Africa). Mzukisi is currently working on a book focusing on "The New Contours of Transformational Leadership in South Africa".

 

Mzukisi offers insights to corporates and public sector leaders in South Africa and abroad on themes related to transformational Leadership; Africa’s Rise and Global Challenges; Emerging Economies; and Political Trends in South Africa. He has also consulted extensively with clients in the mining and financial services industries, offering advice on regulation, stakeholder engagement, and reputational leadership. He also established the Emerging Powers and Global Challenges programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) focusing on, in particular, the BRICS in Africa and their leadership role in global governance processes.

 

Until recently Mzukisi taught international political economy at the University of Pretoria, where he was deputy director at the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation. He is a Senior Associate at Tutwa Consulting and a Research Associate affiliated with the Department of Political Sciences, University of Pretoria. He is a regular columnist for the Business Day newspaper and appears regularly on domestic and international media. He obtained his PhD from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom; MA from the University of Stellenbosch; and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cape Town.
